Sheep wool is a natural material with excellent insulating properties, it is breathable and resistant to odours. However, its fine fibres require gentle care to preserve their quality and natural properties.
Improper cleaning can cause shrinkage, damage to the structure, or loss of softness.
Washing Procedure For Sheep Wool
Always read the care instructions on the label before washing. Most sheep wool should be cleaned by hand or professionally, but some modern treatments allow for machine washing as well.
Hand Washing
- Fill a basin or larger container with lukewarm water (maximum 30°C).
- Add a mild detergent designed for wool or a lanolin-based product.
- Gently submerge the sheep wool and press it to allow the water and detergent to penetrate the fibres.
- Avoid scrubbing or twisting to prevent the wool from shrinking.
- Thoroughly rinse the wool in clean water until all detergent residues are removed.
Machine Washing
- Use a gentle washing cycle designed for wool or hand washing.
- The water temperature should not exceed 30°C, and the spin speed should be as low as possible (ideally under 400 rpm).
- Always use a detergent suitable for wool and delicate fabrics.
Drying
- Never dry wool in a dryer or under direct sunlight.
- Lay it flat on a clean, dry surface (e.g., a towel) in the shade to maintain its shape. During drying, gently reshape it to its original form.
Maintenance Tips
- Regularly air out sheep wool in fresh air to maintain its freshness.
- For local stains, clean them with a damp cloth and a mild detergent without chemicals.
- If you’re not using the wool, store it in a dry place in a breathable bag to prevent moisture penetration and damage.
With proper care, sheep wool will retain its exceptional qualities and serve you for many years.
