Grass stains are a nightmare for many, but you don’t have to write off your favourite clothes just yet. With the right approach and a few clever tricks, you can remove them with ease.
Why Are Grass Stains So Stubborn?
Grass contains natural dyes that penetrate deeply into textile fibers. If not removed quickly, they can become "locked" in the fabric, especially if the clothing is washed at high temperatures.
Proven Methods to Remove Grass Stains
1. Start with Cold Water
Never use hot water on grass stains, as heat sets the dye. Rinse the stain with cold water and gently rub it to loosen surface dirt.
2. Apply Gall Soap or Vinegar
Apply gall soap to the stain, which works wonders on organic stains. Alternatively, mix vinegar and water in a 1:1 ratio and apply the solution directly to the stain. Gently rub it in with a cloth or a soft-bristled brush. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes.
3. Pre-Washing Is Key
After applying the cleaning agent, rinse the stain thoroughly with cold water. If you’re using vinegar, add a few drops of laundry detergent to the fabric and gently rub the affected area.
4. Wash the Clothes in the Washing Machine
Use a gentle wash cycle and a temperature of up to 40 °C. Add an enzymatic detergent, which is effective against biological stains like grass or mud.
5. Check the Result Before Drying
Before putting the clothes in the dryer or out in the sun, check if the stain is completely gone. If it’s still visible, repeat the process. Heat could permanently set the stain.
