Keeping clothes vibrant even after multiple washes can be challenging, but it’s not impossible. Choosing the right washing program, detergent, and following a few tips can help preserve the colours of your garments so they look like new.
Why Do Clothes Lose Their Colour?
Colour fading during washing is mainly caused by:
- excessively high water temperature,
- unsuitable detergents,
- insufficient sorting of laundry,
- washing in hard water.
Tips for Washing Clothes Without Losing Colour
- Wash coloured clothes separately from white and black items to prevent staining or fading.
- Wash coloured clothes in cold or lukewarm water (max. 30 – 40 °C). Lower temperatures are gentler on colours and reduce the risk of fabric shrinkage.
- Choose a detergent designed for coloured or black laundry, which contains ingredients that protect the colours.
- Before washing, turn coloured items inside out to minimize friction with other fabrics. This trick reduces colour fading and helps prevent pilling.
- Choose a gentle cycle with low spin speed to reduce wear on the clothes.
- If you have hard water, use a water softener.
- Hot air in the dryer can weaken colours and cause fading. It’s better to air dry your clothes, away from direct sunlight.
