When removing marker stains, acting quickly is crucial. The sooner you start, the higher the chance the stain won’t become permanent.
What you'll need:
- Isopropyl alcohol or rubbing alcohol,
- Acetone-free nail polish remover (if necessary),
- Cotton pads or a clean cloth,
- Paper towels or a cloth for padding,
- Laundry detergent.
How to Wash Marker Stains from Clothing
- Prepare the clothing – place a paper towel or clean cloth underneath the stain to prevent the marker from transferring to the other side of the fabric.
- Apply the alcohol – use isopropyl alcohol (which can be found in pharmacies) and apply it to a cotton pad. Gently rub the stain from the edges towards the center to prevent it from spreading.
- Check the stain – if the marker is still present, try gently rubbing the stain with a non-acetone nail polish remover. Always use a small amount to avoid damaging the fabric.
- Wash the clothing – after the stain is removed, rinse the clothing in cold water with a small amount of laundry detergent. For effective removal of any remaining marker residue, wash the clothing on a regular cycle in the washing machine.
- Do not dry immediately – check if the stain is completely gone before drying the clothing. The tumble dryer can permanently set the stain if it’s not fully removed.
