Linen is a natural material that is highly durable but requires proper care. Incorrect washing or drying can cause the fibres to harden, fade, or become damaged.
How to Wash Linen
1. Wash at Low Temperatures
- Machine Washing: Choose a gentle cycle with a maximum temperature of 30–40 °C. Use low spin speeds (600–800 RPM) to prevent creasing and deformation of the fabric.
- Hand Washing: Ideal for delicate linen garments. Use lukewarm water and a mild detergent. Gently press the fabric without twisting or scrubbing.
2. Use Gentle Detergents
Opt for mild laundry detergents free of harsh chemicals. Avoid bleach and fabric softeners – fabric softeners can reduce the natural elasticity of linen fibres.
3. Air Drying
Dry your clothes naturally in the air. Hang them on a hanger or a clothesline. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can cause colours to fade.
If the fabric is heavily wrinkled, leave it slightly damp and remove the remaining moisture by ironing.
4. Ironing for a Perfect Look
Linen is best ironed while it’s still slightly damp. Use a steam iron or moisten the clothing with a spray bottle of water. For a casual look, skip the ironing altogether – the natural crumples in linen are part of its charm.
