The dryer is a great helper that can not only dry your laundry but also soften it. However, sometimes instead of a fresh scent, it surprises you with a dull or even unpleasant odour after taking out the clothes.
What Causes the Odour in Laundry After Drying in the Dryer?
One of the most common reasons is accumulated moisture in the dryer. If the dryer isn’t regularly cleaned or properly ventilated, mold can develop inside, causing a musty smell that then transfers to the laundry. Lint filters and the condenser, which are not cleaned regularly, can also trap dust and detergent residues, contributing to the unpleasant odour.
Another issue could be the laundry itself. If it is already slightly musty when placed in the dryer, for example, because it remained damp in the washing machine for too long, the odour will only intensify in the dryer.
How to Make your Laundry Smell Fresh after Using the Dryer?
- Start by checking the dryer. Regularly clean the filters and inspect the condenser if your dryer model doesn’t vent moisture directly outside. At least once a month, clean the drum and the interior of the dryer with a damp cloth soaked in vinegar water to neutralize odours. It’s also important to keep the dryer dry – after each cycle, leave the door open so the inside can air out properly.
- When washing laundry, make sure not to use too much detergent, as it can leave residue. If you have hard water, add white vinegar to the wash – it helps dissolve deposits and neutralizes odours.
- If you want to add an extra burst of freshness, use scented dryer sheets or a few drops of essential oil on special dryer balls, which you can place in the dryer along with your laundry.
