Your "front-line support system" is made from delicate materials that can lose their elasticity, shape, or underwire superpowers if not cared for properly. To keep your bras comfortable and in top shape for the long haul, make sure to follow the right washing routine.
Proper Bra Washing Procedure
- Check the Label: Every bra comes with washing instructions on the label. Most delicate lingerie isn’t suitable for machine washing, especially if it contains underwires or lace.
- Hand Washing: This is the gentlest way to clean your bras. Fill a sink with lukewarm water (up to 30 °C), add a mild detergent designed for lingerie, and let the bra soak for a few minutes. Gently press it—don’t rub or wring it—to avoid damaging the fibres and shape. Rinse thoroughly in clean water.
- Machine Washing: If the bra is machine washable, always place it in a laundry bag to prevent damage. Use a gentle cycle (such as hand wash or lingerie program), set the temperature to a maximum of 30 °C, and spin at no more than 600 rpm. Avoid using fabric softener—it weakens the elastic fibres.
- Drying: Never dry bras in a tumble dryer or hang them by the straps—it can distort their shape. Gently press them with a towel to remove excess water, then lay them flat on a dry towel in a horizontal position. Avoid placing them on a radiator or in direct sunlight, as heat can weaken the material’s elasticity.
