Have you pulled your favourite shirt or dress out of the closet in the morning and been surprised by a musty smell? Have you washed a shirt recently and because of the strange aroma it may go in the wash again? There could be several causes. From dampness in the closet to insufficient drying after washing to long storage of clothes indoors. We advise you how to prevent the musty smell and how to get rid of it.
Why do clothes stink?
The most common reason is humidity. It is moisture that creates the ideal conditions for the growth of bacteria and mould, which are the main cause of unpleasant odours. This problem arises if you have left your clothes insufficiently dried or stored them for a long time in enclosed spaces such as wardrobes or suitcases.
However, with the right care, you can not only remove the smell, but also prevent it from reappearing.
Proven methods for removing musty odours
One of the most effective methods is the use of vinegar. Vinegar is great for neutralizing odors and is also antibacterial. You don't have to worry about your clothes smelling of vinegar after washing - it will evaporate as they dry, leaving only freshness behind.
1. Using baking soda
The procedure is simple:
- Pour baking soda directly on clothes or add half a cup to the washing machine drum.
- Turn the washing machine on to the normal wash cycle.
- For extra freshness, you can soak the clothes in the soda water for a while before washing them in the machine.
2. Vinegar as a natural deodorant
Vinegar not only removes the smell, but also kills bacteria:
- Add one cup of white vinegar to the fabric softener dispenser or directly into the washing machine drum.
- Wash clothes at the recommended temperature according to the label.
3. Essential oils for freshness
To get a pleasant scent, add a few drops of lavender, lemon or tea tree oil to the wash. The oils are not only refreshing but also have antibacterial properties.
Proper washing and drying as prevention
Never overfill the washing machine. Clothes need space to be washed and rinsed thoroughly. Also use good quality and appropriate detergents.
Inadequate drying is also a common cause of musty smells. It is therefore important to dry clothes in the fresh air or in a tumble dryer. If you do not have the option of drying outside, make sure that the room where you dry your clothes is well ventilated. In winter, turn on an electric diffuser or dehumidifier while drying indoors.
Laundry perfume as a long-term solution
If you want your clothes to stay fresh for a long time, try laundry perfumes. They will give your clothes a pleasant scent that will last even after several wears. They can also be a great addition to your home fragrance or scented card to keep your wardrobe and rooms fresh and free from musty smells.
